The 3D screensavers of Fred Cass, known as VRMan, kept running on modern Windows.

3D Christmas screensaver

vrChristmas

A tree with presents stands in a snowy night. Ornaments, sleighs and strings of lights fly in from every direction and settle onto its branches, a toy train circles below, and the camera swoops in for close-ups while holiday music plays.

The 2026 rebuild

The original source code was lost, so the Windows screensaver was written from scratch for this archive. The browser version goes further: it reproduces how the original behaves, using VRMan's own models and textures, with ornaments flying on smoke trails, strings of lights, falling snow, a train, and a tree that fills up with ornaments over time. Its music is the original soundtrack: the 20 MIDI arrangements built into VRMan's screensaver, played in random order.

  • Windows 10 and 11, one small .scr file
  • No D3DRM.DLL and no installer
  • Draws in the Screen Saver Settings preview
  • Music off by default; turn it on in Settings

Fred's original

VRMan's own release, unchanged. It runs on Windows 10 and 11 once D3DRM.DLL sits in the same folder as the screensaver.

  • Windows 95, 98, ME and XP as released
  • Windows 10 and 11 with D3DRM.DLL
  • Optional holiday music

Step-by-step setup for the original

Install vrChristmas 2026

  1. Download vrChristmas2026.zip and open it.
  2. Copy vrChristmas2026.scr to a folder that will stay put, such as C:\Screensavers.
  3. Right-click the file and choose Install. On Windows 11 it may be under Show more options. Screen Saver Settings opens with vrChristmas selected.
  4. Click Settings... to turn the music on or off, then OK.

The file isn't code-signed yet, so Windows may say it's from an unknown publisher. Choose More info, then Run anyway. The 2026 rebuild is new; if anything looks wrong on your PC, tell us what Windows version and graphics card you have.
